9 The humble He guides in justice, and the humble He teaches His way.
God promises His guidance to those who are humble. He promises us that He will teach His ways to the humble. What are characteristics of humility?
A person who is humble is a person who is teachable and leadable. Humility is a state of mind that recognizes one's need for God. In verse 8, David writes, "God teaches sinners His way." Humility recognizes that we all are sinners and we need God in our lives. We come to the place in our lives where we realize that Jesus' sacrificial death on the cross was for us and that it was what He did for us at Calvary that secures our future as well as our present.
Humility requires prayer. Prayer is the catalyst for our faith. Faith recognizes the need that we have for God in our lives and that allows God to guide us and then teach us. As the Holy Spirit begins to work in our hearts and in our minds, the conviction that sin brings causes us to cry out to God, "Be merciful to me a sinner! Forgive me of my sin" and this is where our lives really begin! The Bible promises that God will hear our cry from heaven and He will forgive our sin and He will make us part of His forever family! God promises us that whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Prayer puts us in the right place to receive God's leadership and His guidance. When you and I are willing to come to the Lord and acknowledge our need for Him in our lives, He will bless us with His presence. He will guide us and He will teach us.
Humility also involves being led. It involves being taught. So, as we respond to God's leadership and His guidance in obedience, our humility is broadened. This allows God to teach us more and guide us farther down the pathway to life.
We need to continually be going to God in prayer acknowledging our need for Him and then seeking His guidance and His strength so that we can be all that He would have us be. He will do His part; all we have to do is do ours.
