1And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
The disciples watched Jesus get alone with God in prayer time after time. On one of those occasions, Jesus finished praying and one of His disciples asked Him to teach them to pray. The disciples recognized the value of prayer to Jesus and they wanted to experience the value of prayer for themselves.
Notice something. Jesus prayed and the disciples came and requested that He teach them to pray. Jesus had no doubt prayed with the disciples on a number of occasions. They saw Him get alone to pray as well. Jesus waited until the disciples asked Him to teach them to pray and then He gave them the model prayer. Jesus was already teaching the disciples the value of prayer; now He would begin to teach them how to pray. There is a big difference between the value of something and the application of it.
When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them He no doubt smiled on the inside. When we come to God seeking Him and His will for our lives, He will reveal Himself to us. When we ask for His instruction, He will give us the instruction that we need. The value of prayer itself is seen in the asking! When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, they learned the first lesson of prayer; that God grants our requests to know Him and to come closer to Him.
